Better Together: Why We Joined the B Corp Coffee Coalition

Article by Nick Percy

Great coffee has never been the work of one person, one company, or one country.

It's a chain from farmers, exporters, importers, roasters to baristas and the challenges facing the chain don't stop at anyone's door. That's why, when the opportunity came to help build something bigger, we put our hand up.

Nomad Coffee Group is proud to be a Founding Member of the B Corp Coffee Coalition.

What is the B Corp Coffee Coalition?

The Coalition brings together B Corps working across the coffee sector pooling knowledge, resources, and collective learning to tackle the issues that affect all of us along the supply chain.

The two key focus areas it's launching with are ones we know well:

- Livelihoods along the supply chain ensuring that the people who grow, process, and move coffee are supported, fairly compensated, and able to build sustainable futures
- Attracting and retaining people to the coffee industry from farm to café, the pipeline of people choosing coffee as a career is under pressure

Both issues are real. Both are urgent. And neither can be solved alone.

Why we got involved

As our Group Sustainability Manager Nick Percy puts it "this just lines up with what we do, and intend to do within the industry."

But there's a practical reason too. "We don't have all the answers..the coffee industry is super complex, and there are a lot of hands involved. By connecting with other B Corps, we can share what we've learned over the years and learn from others operating in very different markets."

For our Head of Coffee Jack Allisey, it's also about deepening relationships that already matter. "It's great to strengthen our partnerships with existing suppliers like Café Imports and collectively, we can make an even greater impact."

The stakes are real

The numbers coming out of Colombia are confronting. The average age of farmers continues to rise, and with retirements outpacing new entrants, there simply aren't enough next-generation growers coming through.

We see similar pressures here in Australia with fewer people choosing to build a career in cafés, which makes things genuinely hard for an industry that depends on skilled, passionate people at every level.

These aren't abstract trends. They're the kind of structural challenges that, left unaddressed, will reshape the industry within a generation.

Moving forward, together

The B Corp Coffee Coalition is a chance to move faster, learn more, and make a bigger difference than any of us could on our own. We're excited to get stuck in and to see what's possible when purpose-driven businesses across the coffee world work together towards the same goals.
